The Michigan firearms deer hunting season kicked off Wednesday, with more than half-a-million hunters expected to take part this year. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told Michigan News Network hunters should take some basic precautions.

“Never discharge a weapon in the direction of anything except those things you’re intending to shoot, number one,” Bouchard said. “Number two, know what is beyond that target. The other thing to do is let somebody know where you are going. It could be nothing, but maybe you fell and you broke your leg or something, especially if you’re hunting from an elevated platform.”

Bouchard says hunters should make sure their community allows hunting before setting off into their local woods. He says some communities ban hunting, while others restrict the type of firearms that can be used.
