State House Speaker Talks 2018 Priorities

As 2017 comes to a end, lawmakers in Lansing are looking ahead to next year’s session. Speaker of the Michigan House Tom Leonard tells Michigan News Network an increased emphasis on skilled trades and technical education is needed.

“When you look at where Michigan’s unemployment rate is right now, we are essentially at full employment,” Leonard said. “The problem right now is we don’t have enough skilled individuals to take these skilled trades jobs.”

The Lansing-area Republican says mental health reform and ending driver responsibility fees are also on the 2018 agenda. He adds mental health is an issue lawmakers will probably delve into as well.”
