Legislation from state Representative Beth Griffin would establish a grant program in Michigan for counties to maintain veterans service offices. She tells us county veteran officers can connect veterans with the often-confusing benefits system.

“There are actually eleven counties in the state, including Van Buren, that don’t have full-time veterans service officers right now, and some counties don’t have anything,” Griffin said.

Griffin tells us the new legislation would set aside a maximum of $5 million each year for county veterans office grants. Each county with a veteran services office would receive $25,000, plus an additional amount based on the number of vets in that county. Griffin hopes the plan gets a committee hearing soon.
