The shootings at a Florida High School this week have many parents nervous about sending their kids to school, but education leaders in southwest Michigan say they do all they can to be prepared for dangerous situations. Lakeshore Schools Superintendent Phil Freeman tells WSJM News it’s standard practice to restrict access to the buildings.

“We’re on a partial perimeter lockdown during normal school hours, which means the only place where you can enter the building is through the one main door that gets you through the office, and so that’s just another layer of protection that we provide for our students and staff,” Freeman said.

Freeman says recent bond-funded renovations made that possible. He also tells us all schools work regularly with local police to plan for emergencies and to hold drills for lockdown situations. He says the kids know what to do, and it’s important for one and all to know they can report suspicious situations. The kids also know they can do so anonymously with the OK2Say text and tip service.
