A Democrat has stepped forward to run for the 79th District Michigan House seat. 29-year-old Joey Andrews of St. Joseph is the first one to announce a run for the office. Andrews is a St. Joe native and Wayne State Law graduate who hopes to represent the area in Lansing come next year. The 79th District is currently represented by Kim LaSata, but she’s not running for the state Senate to replace John Proos. Andrews tells us he has the perspective needed in Lansing, that of a young person. He adds “our state government has implemented policies that erode at equality and opportunity for Michigan residents” just to benefit special interests. Like many Democratic candidates lately, Andrews says the 2016 election was a wake-up call to him. He cites improving education, protecting the Great Lakes, encouraging small business, and pursuing clean and renewable energy sources as among his priorities.
