State Senator John Proos is pleased with a judiciary budget approved by the Michigan Senate Judiciary subcommittee this week. He tells WSJM News the new budget, which covers corrections, is a 1.1% increase over last year’s spending plan and includes money for technology upgrades, problem-solving courts, and the Swift and Sure Sanctions Program.

“I look forward to continuing the discussions with my House colleagues and the governor to fund properly the kind of problem solving courts that address the underlying issues of drug, alcohol abuse, and mental illness that really have created some of the concerns that we have in our offender population that creates crime in our communities,” Proos said.

Proos says problem solving courts are a way to keep communities safe and allow for economic development. He wants to keep the programs going as long as they are tried and true. The budget bill has been sent to the full Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration.
