New Tax Scam

The IRS is warning taxpayers about the latest scam. Spokesperson Alejandra Castro-Nunez tells WSJM News this one happens when a scammer gets ahold of some of your previous tax information and banking info.

“They do a tax return, and then they use your bank account to get that money deposited,” Nunez said. “Then you get a call because they want you to send them that money. Obviously, you’re seeing this money that you weren’t expecting, and so you may very well believe the IRS erroneously deposited it and that they want it sent their way.”

Nunez says the IRS will not just call you demanding money, nor will it threaten to have you arrested. Anyone with questions can call 1-800-829-1040
