Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation from state Representative Kim LaSata to rename a stretch of Red Arrow Highway in Berrien County in honor of a fallen state police trooper. She tells WSJM News Red Arrow Highway between Glenlord and Hilltop Roads will now be called the Trooper Robert J. Mihalik Memorial Highway.

“Trooper Mihalik was a state trooper who was killed in 1984,” LaSata said. “He was answering a call, looking for an individual who had taken off from a gas station without paying for gas and cigarettes, which totaled just $35.”

Mihalik was shot by that person. LaSata tells us Michigan State Police out of the Niles post made the push to honor Mihalik. A sign will now go up along the affected stretch of road to make the name change official.
