A familiar face in the St. Joseph community is now running for the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. Chris Heugel, the Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce president and a former St. Joseph city commissioner, has announced he’s seeking the Sixth District position that is currently occupied by Berrien County Commissioner Jeanette Leahey. He spoke with WSJM News.

“Once I heard that Jeanette was not going to run and I have such respect for Jeanette [as] she’s done just an outstanding job in our community, I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to take the ball where she’s left it and try to run with it,” Heugel said.

Heugel tells us he’d like to push for public safety and better roads as a county commissioner. Last year he stepped down from the St. Joseph City Commission after moving to St. Joe Township from the city. He tells us he’d like to be of public service again. Heugel is running as a Republican in an August primary for county commission, although there are so far no other candidates running. The Sixth District covers parts of St. Joseph, Royalton, Lincoln, and Sodus Townships.
