The Lake Michigan College Board of Trustees has approved a tuition hike. LMC President Trevor Kubatzke tells us the board voted Tuesday to increase tuition for both in-district and out of district students, keeping the rate as low as possible for those who pay taxes to LMC.

“We kept our taxing district at 2%, but increased our out of district and international rates by 5%,” Kubatzke said.

Kubatzke tells us the increase will raise tuition for the average student by $34 per year. He notes a recent increase in Pell Grants will offset that for many. LMC remains the lowest-cost high education option for southwest Michigan students.

“We’re still roughly a third of any of the four-year options in the state,” Kubatzke said.

The increases take effect in July. Kubatzke tells us increases costs and expanding programs at LMC re the reason for the tuition hike.
