It’s something Michigan’s congressional delegation has been pushing for years, and President Trump Saturday night said he’s going to start working on repairs to the Soo Locks in northern Michigan soon.

“The Soo Locks are going to hell, you know that, right?” Trump said at a Washington Township rally outside of Detroit. “We’re going to get them fixed up, we’re going to get them fixed.”

The President suggested he might even call the Army Corp of Engineers Sunday to get the project started. Michigan lawmakers say the economy could hurt the economy and cripple the U.S. steel industry if the Poe Lock goes out of service. Congress authorized building a new lock alongside the Poe Lock in 1986 under President Reagan, bu the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been fighting those plans ever since.
