Barbecues can be fun, but that can change quickly if someone gets food poisoning. Marianne Gravely with the USDA has some advice that she shared with Michigan News Network.

“The Center for Disease Control estimates that 128,000 people are hospitalized every year and 3,000 people die every year from food-borne illness,” Gravely said.

Gravely says summer brings a higher number of food-borne illnesses partly because of the warmer weather. She says don’t cross contaminate, keep things clean, refrigerate food, and always use a thermometer to make sure meat is done.
