Coast Guard Safety Event

The U.S. Coast Guard will hold a special water safety event this weekend. Petty Officer Jeffrey Gehrke with the St. Joseph post tells WSJM News the coast guard and other agencies will be at out in the parking lot of the Berrien County Courthouse on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our boats are going to be there along with the Michigan DNR and the local law enforcement as well,” Gehrke said. “They’re going to be bringing some boats. Medic 1 is supposed to bring an ambulance, and just anybody who is out on the water and is going to be helping with boating safety.”

Gehrke tells us the goal is to remind everyone how to stay safe now that the summer is about here.

“We’ll just open up to the general public and we’re hoping people will come by just to get educated and get ready for the boating season,” Gehrke said.

Gehrke tells us there will be plenty for the kids to do, and everyone can check out water rescue gear. This is the first time the Coast Guard has held the event at the courthouse parking lot. Last year, it got rained out.
