Lawmakers Consider Surplus Options

More talks are expected this week between lawmakers and the governor’s office on whether to spend or save money from a budget surplus. Economists estimate a $500 million surplus for this year and next. Michigan Senate Appropriations Chairman Dave Hildenbrand of Lowell told Michigan News Network he doesn’t want all of the money spent on road repairs.

“I’ve always support…to use the dollars wisely, paying off debt, putting money in our savings account and investing it in some key areas that are important to the people of Michigan, like continuing to improve our infrastructure, making sure our schools are safe,” Hildenbrand said.

Meanwhile, State Budget Director John Walsh is confident some money will go toward road work. The governor has asked lawmakers to finalize next years budget by the end of the month.
