Working on issues that affect Native American children in Michigan. That’s what is happening at a forum of state, federal, and tribal judges in Petoskey this week. Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget McCormack is taking part in the forum and told Michigan News Network the state has 12 federally recognized tribes.

“They have their own constitution, and they have their own courts,” McCormack said. “They are their own sovereign nation, and we therefore have a lot of families that we have in common throughout the state, and unless we are working together, we’re not serving them very well.”

The Michigan Tribal State Federal Judicial Forum was established in 2014.
