The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education will be asked next week to approve a policy giving the district more control over which students are allowed to enroll. Interim Superintendent Patricia Robinson tells WSJM News an issue has arisen with an influx of kids following February’s student could.

“Some of them are coming because they moved or they are just switching schools, “Robinson said. “There are a number of them who come to our district because of discipline issues or challenges they’re having at their current school within another district.”

The policy the board of education is asked to consider would state that the district has the right to explore a student’s disciplinary problems in another district before letting them in at Benton Harbor Area Schools. Right now, any student who lives in the district is allowed to register.
