Construction on Wallace Avenue in St. Joseph will get underway on Monday. St. Joe City Engineer Tim Zebell tells WSJM News temporary traffic controls and detour signs started going up Thursday. The road will remain open to traffic throughout the weekend, but the work starts Monday on Wallace from Lakeshore to Lakeview

“The roadway will be completely removed and all of the underground utilities, the sanitary sewer, the storm sewer, and the water main will be replaced over that length,” Zebell said.

Zebell tells us this will require traffic changes.

“That affects that east-west connection between Lakeshore Drive and Niles Avenue so people will have to find an alternate route,” Zebell said. “There will be a detour posted.

Zebell tells us the project will help reduce broken water main issues that have plagued the area in recent years. The $1.5 million project is expected to be finished in September. Wallace between South State Street and Stadium will be back open in time for the start of the new school year.
