School districts around the country will soon be able to apply for federal grants to conduct facility reviews. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News the U.S. Justice Department is now taking applications for the grants due to the STOP School Violence Act, which was approved in March.

“We passed a school violence grant bill that allows schools to seek some funds to do an assessment,” Upton said. “What are our weaknesses here? How do we keep our kids safe? Do we have too many doors? Do we need cameras?”

Upton says each school has different needs, and the federal grants will make it possible for each to identify them. Grant applications will remain open until July 23. The Stop School Violence Act was approved following the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida. The grants can also be used for mental health training for staff.
