The Berrien County Health Department has activated a heat alert for this entire weekend, warning everyone to take steps to keep themselves healthy and safe. Spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News you need to be sure to drink plenty of water.

“Usually, your body is able to cool itself down by sweating,” Conrad said. “That’s how we’re able to regulate our body temperature. However, when we have extremely hot weather, sweating just isn’t enough.”

The first concern is heat exhaustion, the symptoms of which include heavy sweating, cramps, cool and moist skin, and a quick pulse. If you notice those symptoms in yourself or someone else, take action.

“Get that person out of the sun, out of the heat to an air conditioned place if possible,” Conrad said. “Lay them down, loosen their clothing if you need to.”

The next concern is heat stroke, which brings a fast heartbeat, headache, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. Get medical attention if that happens. Conrad advises all to limit their outdoor activity, wear loose clothing, and stay in air conditioning. St. Joseph City Hall will be open this weekend for everyone to come in to cool off. The department of public safety tells us the restrooms and drinking fountains will be available. It will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Conrad says you can also go to a mall, library, or movie theater to cool off.
