The annual “spit-tacular” International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship returns to southwest Michigan this weekend. The 45th such event will be held Saturday at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm in Eau Claire, and the farm’s Monica Teichman says it’s a blast.

“It’s very competitive,” Teichman says. “People don’t think so, but there are those few who take spitting very seriously.”

As for how competitors can get distance on the cherry spit, the techniques vary. “Some people say they curl their tongue, some fill their cheeks, some people just have a lot of hot air,” Teichman said.

Qualifying is from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by the championship at 1 p.m.
