Upper Peninsula Floods Damage Court Documents

That flooding in the Upper Peninsula last month didn’t just wash out roads and damage some homes, it also damaged thousands of court documents. Houghton County Clerk and Register of Deeds Jennifer Lorenz says the courthouse took on a lot of water.

“We had about four feet of water down on our basement and first level,” said Lorenz. “It ended up backing up and going into a closed vault where our court records were, and damaged them.” She says they don’t have computer backups of those documents, but will work on that now. A Livonia company will attempt to restore the documents, which could take more than a year.,
