Democrats and at least one Republican are claiming the state’s highest law enforcement officer may have broken the law, and they have the email to prove it. The Detroit Free Press broke the latest angle to the story that Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley brought up in a debate this summer, and he’s using it to try to chip away at Attorney General Bill Schuette’s lead before next week’s primary. The emails show that the Attorney General asked over a dozen staff members to do political work on state time in 2015. Calley claims he has never seen anything like it.

“They don’t even really have a state job,” said the lieutenant governor. “It’s just politicking all the time.”

Schuette says the staffers were doing it during breaks in the work day and tried brushing off the controversy.

“Desperation politics at its worst,” said Schuette. “I’ve got Democrats attacking me because they don’t want to face me in November; they know I’m the strongest candidate and can win. The Republicans are desperately behind.”

The emails were sent and received using personal, not state, accounts, but some were done during the normal 8-5 workday. It’s unclear if the issue will impact the primary, as Schuette leads Calley by at least 20% with 23% undecided according to a new Mitchell Research poll out this week.
