The matchup is set in the race to succeed term-limited Senator John Proos in the 21st state Senate District. After just one term in the House, Republican Representative Kim LaSata decided to make a run for the Senate, and defeated fellow Representative Dave Pagel in yesterday’s primary. WSJM News asked her about why she chose to shoot for the upper chamber now instead of running for two more terms in the House.

“With term limits, we can’t really choose our timing,” explained LaSata. With Proos term-limited out, the seat was open and she felt the time was right to give it a go.

As for Representative Pagel, he is term-limited out of the House. Democrat Ian Haight of St. Joseph did not have a primary opponent and will take on LaSata in November. Representative LaSata is the wife of Berrien County Judge Charlie LaSata, himself a former state lawmaker.
