Congressman Fred Upton has announced a $180,000 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant for the Allegan Conservation District. It’s specifically for the Allegan Conservation District Project, intended to encourage the implementation of best management practices to reduce sediment runoff in the Gun River Watershed. The Great Lakes Commission says the program protects the lakes by helping communities reduce the sediment and nutrient runoff. Upton’s office says every year, tons of pollutants enter the Great Lakes Basin, causing economic and environmental losses, along with contributing to the formation of Algal Blooms and dead zones. The GLC aims to fight that by working with local organizations like the Allegan Conservation District. The grant funding is provided by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative under an agreement between the GLC and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
