The upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend will have a lot of us on the road for a final summer trip. As has been the case for years, extra police patrols will also be out there. Berrien County Undersheriff Chuck Heit says multiple agencies around the county are taking part in another Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over campaign.

“That’s when we get the sheriff’s office, the St. Joe Department of Public Safety, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, the Bridgman Police Department, and the New Buffalo Police Department all participating in this enforcement period,” Heit said.

The extra patrols are funded by federal traffic safety money, and the enforcement will run from tomorrow through September 3. During the Labor Day holiday last year, 15 people were killed in traffic crashes in Michigan. Of those, 26.6% of the wrecks were alcohol-related.
