STEM education in Bridgman is getting a boost. The Bridgman Foundation for Educational Excellence gave the final $150,000 of $300,000 raised to support the F.C. Reed Middle School STEM Lab during this week’s school board meeting. Superintendent Shane Peters tells us the school’s approach is a little different than others when it comes to the science, technology, engineering, and math lab as all 5th through 8th graders can participate in the STEM lab.

“It’s part of the elective program, so every 10 days, every fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grader has an opportunity to participate in the STEM Lab,” says Peters.

He adds that thanks to the foundation’s work raising a total of $300,000, they will begin to focus on the high school to help the students who became interested in those courses continue learning them and being successful from ninth through 12th grades. The money raised came from local, private donations along with the proceeds from the Foundation’s annual Now and Forever auction and Lost Dunes golf outing. Additional donations were made by the Upton Foundation, The Lakeshore Rotary Club, and the Pokagon Fund.
