Hundreds of law enforcement officers from all over Michigan will be taking part in torch runs for the Special Olympics starting this weekend. Special Olympics spokesperson Aaron Mills tells WSJM News the organization is the official non-profit of police throughout the state, receiving more than $1 million each year thanks to law enforcement fundraisers. The torch runs are part of those efforts.

“They go around the state and they do over 40 different communities around the state where we have community runs,” Mills said. “These aren’t necessarily competitive runs.”

The torch runs start on Saturday in the Thumb area, and will wrap up next Saturday in Oakland County. The torch run in St. Joseph will be Monday. It will start at the Howard Band Shell at 11 a.m. with registration at 10 a.m. Mills says anyone can take part by just showing up. The registration fee is $25. The money raised will go to Special Olympics of Michigan athletic training and events. You can find out more right here.
