Officials at Benton Harbor Area Schools are planning a new push to promote literacy. Communications Director Amy Nichols tells WSJM News “We Welcome Literacy” is a community event set for October 8 at the high school. On hand will be Dr. Patricia Edwards and Dr. Susan Piazza, experts on literacy education who will talk with parents about engaging the children in reading and learning.

“We’re going to break them up into small groups and they’ll have a chance to meet with people from the school and Dr. Edwards and Dr. Piazza,” Nichols said.

Nichols tells us this will be the first such meeting. There will be another once its lessons are evaluated.

“We’ll get to know what everybody needs because some need a little work here, and others need a little work there,” Nichols said.

Dr. Edwards is a professor of teacher education at Michigan State University, and the first African American president of the Literacy Reading Association. Dr. Piazza is a professor and coordinator of Literacy Studies at Western Michigan University. The town hall discussion will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. with a free spaghetti dinner from 6 to 6:30. Nichols tells us books and prizes will also be given away.
