The public has had a chance to review a possible Red Arrow Highway trail project being planned in Berrien County. At an open house on Wednesday, Berrien County Parks Director Brian Bailey told WSJM News the master plan for the linear trail from Bridgman to New Buffalo is being put together now.

“It will give us some cost estimates in terms of going from south of Bridgman to US-12 near Galien River County Park,” Bailey said. “It’ll provide us an opportunity to identify trail heads so people have a safe place to park to go from point A to point B.”

Bailey says this is a project that would be put together by the Berrien County Parks Department and Berrien County Road Department, noting the county’s recent takeover of the former road commission helped get it rolling. He was pleased with public reception to the idea.

“There are a lot of comments up on our boards that are very positive in support of the idea, and so we want to hear from the public so we can incorporate some of their ideas into this master plan,” Bailey said.

The master plan could be drafted later this fall, and the county could start to seek grants next April. At the earliest, actual work on the roughly ten-mile trail could start in 2020.
