Governor Snyder Urged To Veto Efforts To Gut Minimum Wage, Sick Leave

By Doug Cunningham

The Michigan League For Public Policy says lame-duck GOP legislative attempts to gut minimum wage and sick leave legislation is both anti-democratic and bad public policy. So Governor Snyder should veto them. Gilda Jacobs is CEO of The Michigan League For Public Policy. She says Republican efforts to use the lame-duck legislative session to weaken minimum wage and sick leave legislation disrespects the will of Michigan’s people on these issues.

“We really have an erosion of democracy when we see the legislature being able to circumvent the will of the people. In Michigan I think we saw that people wanted to get involved, they wanted to make a difference. There were ballot proposals that they passed at the voting booth. And they’re even trying to gut some of those.”

Jacobs hopes Governor Snyder will veto these efforts out of respect for Michigan voters who signed petitions supporting a minimum wage increase and sick leave legislation.

“The governor has the ability to veto these bills. We’re hoping that the governor will do the right thing and show that he wants to protect the rights of all of those hundreds of thousands of folks that signed this proposal.”

Jacobs says raising Michigan’s minimum wage and providing sick leave for workers are both good public policies for Michigan.
