Funding for the year has been approved for seven senior centers by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. At this week’s meeting, more than $2.3 million from the county-wide senior millage was put aside for the centers in Benton Harbor, Buchanan, Berrien Springs, Niles, Coloma, Harbert, and St. Joseph. Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough noted they each get $333,000.

“To me, in my opinion, the most fair thing to do is to take the millage that the Berrien County community voted, and divide it equally,” Yarbrough said.

Yarbrough said that ensures no area is underserved by its senior center. She also noted a Berrien County senior can go to any senior center in the county, adding if one doesn’t offer a particular service or feature, you can check the others for it. The resolution authorizing the funding includes several accounting and auditing procedures for the board of each center in order to qualify.
