The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reaching out to those with a gambling problem to let them know help is available with the holidays here. Spokesperson Lynn Sutfin tells WSJM News the stress of the holidays can make someone seek a release, which is dangerous for those with a gambling problem. Her advice?

“First of all, don’t view gambling as a way to make money or a way to maybe supplement that holiday spending,” Sutfin said. “Maybe you’re buying a few too many gifts. Don’t go gambling alone. Make sure you make it kind of a social activity.”

Sutfin also reminds those buying gifts for others that gambling is not, in fact, a gift. Avoid normalizing the activity through giving out lottery tickets or gambling trips. The state has a gambling helpline for those struggling. Sutfin says calling it will connect you with local resources that can offer help. If you or someone you know may have a gambling problem, call the Helpline at 800-270-7117 for confidential help. For more information, visit Michigan.gov/gamblingdisorder.
