There’s concern about the U.S. food supply because of the partial government shutdown. Inspections by the Food and Drug Administration are down sharply because of the shutdown. Jennifer Holton is with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and says they cannot step in for the FDA and do the work of the federal inspectors.

“That being said, our food safety inspectors will occasionally pull random samples of a variety of different things, whether it be produce, hummus, potato salad or what not,” explains Holton. “We’ll run those samples through our lab in East Lansing to test for any sort of food safety risks.”

Holton says state inspectors and local health departments will continue to work to protect the safety of the food supply in Michigan.
