The National Human Rights Campaign for Equity is once again this year ranking Michigan low on their State Equity Index because it is still legal to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Michigan Human Rights campaign is renewing their call for the Legislature to add the LGBTQ community to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, but House Speaker Lee Chatfield it’s not going to happen.

“I do not believe we can pass this law while still protecting religious freedom,” says Chatfield.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission has decided to start hearing discrimination cases, interpreting the word “sex” to include the LGBTQ Community, despite an opinion from former Attorney General Bill Schuette that they don’t have that authority. Current AG Dana Nessel has been asked by the governor to review that opinion.
