Congressman Fred Upton is praising President Trump for using his State of the Union to try to reach across the aisle.

“He’s recognizing for sure that we have divided government,” says the St. Joseph Republican. “And to get anything done, we have to work together and a lot of us welcome that. It seemed like he was reaching out the olive branch to everybody there.”

Michigan News Network political reporter Tim Skubick echoed that, saying Trump hit on a lot of issues that have been top priorities for Democrats.

“it was a lengthy list,” says Skubick. “Lowering drug prescription costs, family leave, wow, there’s a Democratic issue. Infrastructure changes, and who can be against cancer research for kids?”

Skubick adds that to him, the most telling point is the President acknowledged the record number of female members currently in Congress, most of whom are Democrats.
