The Consumers Energy Foundation has announced it’s providing $1.5 million to non-profits around Michigan this year for projects aiming to preserve, restore, and protect natural resources. Consumers spokesperson Brian Wheeler tells WSJM News the first Planet Awards will go to two or more Michigan non-profits looking to make a positive impact on the state’s land, water, or air.

“We’ve got the Great Lakes, we’ve got a lot of great natural resources in terms of land, in terms of air quality,” Wheeler said. “We’re providing $500,000. It could be in the form of two projects worth $250,000 each.”

Grant seekers can submit applications through March 18 and the winners will be announced on Earth Day, April 22. Wheeler says the ideal candidates will serve a clearly-defined need to restore, preserve, or protect Michigan’s environment and a plan to achieve specific outcomes. The Planet Awards will be the first of three $500,000 grant allocations in 2019, totaling $1.5 million for the year. You can find out more right here.
