The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety’s war on illegal dumping is heating up. At a Monday city commission meeting, department Director Dan McGinnis said there have been 13 arrests so far as police investigate. The department has also had some help from the state.

“The DEQ came and there are some locations where that we suspect might be involved with the dumping of tires,” McGinnis said. “They came in and identified five locations that were not able to produce documents that they are supposed to, according to the state of Michigan.”

McGinnis said he’s been focused on the effort.

“It’s huge,” McGinnis said. “I’ve said before, you cannot get the magnitude on TV and by pictures.”

McGinnis said the city has towed ten vehicles, and police have been able to find some addresses in dumped trash to identify the perpetrators. He vowed not to rest “until our city looks like every other city around here.” City commissioners applauded him for the effort.
