The South Haven City Council has received an update from Van Buren Conservation District executive director AJ Brucks regarding invasive species which are likely to cause economic or environmental harm. She is encouraging people with Hemlock trees who live within five miles of Lake Michigan to look carefully at the needles.

“What we’re looking for is a teeny, tiny insect called the Hemlock woolly adelgid, or HWA. It will eventually suck the juice out of the needles and the branches and kill them, and eventually kill the trees,” Brucks told our newsroom.

The Hemlock woolly adelgid are tiny, white and fuzzy. If you see them call 657-4030, extension 5 and report what you’re seeing. The Conservation District will send an agent out to identify and provide treatment assistance.
