Additional Snow Day Bill Sent To Governor Whitmer

After hitting a snag this week in the state Senate, school districts in Michigan will be able to get four additional snow days forgiven without having to make up the time. Democrats on Tuesday prevented the bill from getting immediate effect after it passed unanimously, meaning it wouldn’t have helped districts until next year. After the House sent the bill back over, enough of them joined with Republicans to have the legislation become law as soon as Governor Whitmer signs it. Schools have six snow days built into their calendars, and can get a waiver for three more. This will bring the total to 13 days that don’t have to be tacked on to the end of the year for the days that were canceled during the state of emergency at the end of January and beginning of February. The issue for the Democrats in the Senate was the removal of a provision that would have guaranteed hourly non-union school employees be paid for the work missed when school was canceled.
