This Saturday is everyone’s chance to help make a difference for those in need with the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Mark White is a letter carrier in the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph area who tells WSJM News local food pantries see a need for more donations in the summer.

“We walk the streets of Benton Harbor, and see the reality in the street,” White said. “This is a critical time in food insufficiency.”

White says the kids aren’t benefiting from free school lunch programs in the summer. Food donations given to letter carriers this Saturday all stay local.

“Then we’re going to delivery all the food to the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen, which has a larger network of distribution to all the local shelters as well.”

White says you can leave non-perishable food items out by your mailbox — in a box or a bag — on Saturday, and the letter carrier will pick them up when he or she comes by to drop off the mail. Last year, letter carriers collected 75.3 million pounds of food, the third-highest amount since the drive began in 1993.
