This Sunday will bring a chance for everyone to learn more about how they can stay safe and help protect others along piers in southwest Michigan. St. Joseph Department of Public Safety Director Steve Neubecker tells WSJM News officers will be at Tiscornia Beach at the north pier tomorrow,  Sunday, May 26 from noon to 3 p.m. to offer training.

“It will be open to the public,” Neubecker said. “We’re going to talk about rip currents, jumping from the pier and the dangers of it, how to properly throw a ring buoys. We’re going to let people throw ring buoys to get used to it.”

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is also taking part. Those life rings on the north pier were just installed last year after the U.S. Coast Guard recommended the city of St. Joseph add them. Berrien County added life rings to the south pier in 2014.
