The next installment of the OutCenter’s Southwest Michigan VOICES speaker series will be this Thursday at Lake Michigan College. The OutCenter’s Paula Camp tells WSJM News representatives of Spectrum Health will make a presentation about the importance and challenges of accessible local healthcare for the LGBTQ community. Camp says, for example, there can be complications when transgender people seek medical treatment.

“There was a person, a male, who presented with a need for care for cervical cancer, which at first seemed impossible, but when it was revealed that this was a transgender person, it’s a very interesting story about how complicated things can get,” Camp said.

Camp also says the first question many healthcare providers ask when someone seeks care is about gender, which can lead to other problems. The Spectrum representatives on hand for Thursday’s discussion will talk about what’s been done in that organization to help. The Southwest Michigan VOICES discussion will be held at LMC’s Brown Lecture Hall at the Benton Township campus from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
