The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education has approved a new course catalog for students at the high school. At this week’s school board meeting, trustees heard from instructional facilitator Lauren Bernat about the book. She said it was designed to be useful for students from year to year so they can keep track of the classes they have taken when planning for the coming year.

“We have really tried to be innovative, along with some of the ideas from the teachers and from other people within the school to bring the students some new experiences,” Bernat said.

Bernat said those new experiences include new career and technical education classes being offered. Staff talked with teachers and students when selecting them.

“[We] tried to develop some courses that really will engage the students in learning.”

Bernat said the new courses include the returning Allied Health program and classes focused on computer programming, business applications, journalism, and commercial art and graphical design. One goal is to help students get certifications through some of the classes. The new catalog will be available online soon.
