With the future of Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac in question, Enbridge executives say they have taken significant measures to ensure pipeline safety following the oil spill in the Kalamazoo River nine years ago. Company Vice President Guy Jarvis says they have beefed up their in-pipe inspections.

“We are just testing one right now that we co-funded and co-developed, the next generation of inline inspection tools,” Jarvis said. “In the medical sense, we want the best MRI for our pipelines that we can get, and we’re not only using them, we’re facilitating the development.”

Jarvis says Enbridge is fighting efforts by state attorney general Dana Nessel to shut down the current Line Five, which the company wants to protect with a tunnel under the Straits.
