With very hot weather predicted for southwest Michigan in the next few days, the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan wants everyone to remember the needs of their pets. Volunteer coordinator Taylor Michael tells WSJM News your dog is just as affected by the heat as you. She recommends keeping the dog indoors.

“Something people don’t think about is the hot pavement,” Michael said. “The hot pavement of your driveway or sidewalk, or even if you take your dog out for a walk, the road itself can even burn the pads of their feet.”

If you have an outdoor dog, Michael says you can do a few things to make it comfortable.

“You can freeze water bottles and put them in the doghouse, as well as freezing ice cubes with chicken broth to kind of give them a doggy Popsicle.”

Michael says when a pooch gets heat exhaustion, they’ll start panting heavily and their gums will get pale. If the dog is lethargic and shows those other signs, get it cool immediately. Michael also reminds everyone with other outdoor critters like rabbits to make sure they have lots of water.
