Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is seeking public input on the new redistricting commission being set up to draw the state’s legislative districts. Secretary of State spokesperson Shawn Starkey tells WSJM News that’s as the application to serve on the commission is put together.

“Secretarty Benson is asking Michigan citizens for their input on the proposed application language and the eligibility guidelines for the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission,” Starkey said.

Starkey says voters last year amended the Michigan constitution to create a citizen-led commission responsible for drawing district lines for the Michigan Legislature and U.S. Congressional seats.

“This independent commission will be composed of 13 registered Michigan voters, four who self-identify as Democrats, four who self-identify as Republicans, and five who self-identify as unaffiliated with either political party.”

The application process will begin this fall once the Secretary of State has the application itself finished. Members will be picked before September 1 of 2020, and then they’ll start holding public meetings throughout 2021. Starkey says you can see the proposed language and guidelines for the commission application at RedistrictingMichigan.org.
