Congressman Fred Upton is relieved to learn House and Senate leadership have reached a deal with President Trump on the federal budget. Last week, Upton was one of more than 30 House members who signed a letter calling for leadership to prioritize budgeting. He says on Monday, the president announced a spending deal.

“This is going to be a two year budget plan, which really reduces the possibility of a government shutdown this year or next,” Upton said. “It is expected that it’ll be on the House floor for a vote a little later this week.”

Upton says he and others wanted to avoid complications that have occurred in the past when the budget wasn’t done on time.

“It seems like we have an agreement. We’re gong to get it to the president where he will sign it into law and avoid a budget default, which otherwise would occur as early as next month.”

Upton says the current plan has budget caps, avoids sequestration, and will enable all 12 major spending bills to move through Congress.
