Smokey Bear is 75 years old today. There will be a celebration of Smokey at the Mackinac Bridge today and at Comerica Park tonight. Paul Rogers with the Michigan DNR says everyone knows Smokey.
“As soon as people see him, whether they’re young or old, they instantly know the saying that goes along with him, which is (only you can) ‘prevent wildfires,’” says Rogers. “It used to be prevent forest fires, but now it’s prevent wildfires as the new slogan. It’s very recognizable and everybody knows (Smokey) as soon as he comes out and starts going in parades and things.”
Rogers say Smokey Bear is America’s longest-running PSA campaign.
