Following the destruction of an apartment building in Berrien Springs over the weekend, Andrews University is collecting funds to help some of the people who were displaced. Andrews put out a statement on Facebook Sunday saying the university was able to reach all of its students who lived at Park Manor Apartments, and they all had found alternative accommodations. It also says the most urgent need is for cash donations to address food and housing. Meanwhile, Andrews Services and Administration Director Teela Ruehle told our reporting partners at WSBT some affected students started classes this week and were facing hardship.

“For the younger students that we have, it’s the first day of class so they don’t have a computer for the homework that’s coming.”

Ruehle said the professors know which students may need some assistance. Also, the university says you can donate items like children’s clothing through Neighbor to Neighbor on US-31 in Berrien Springs.

Andrew University posted the following instructions for those who want to help apartment residents:

“If you wish to assist with a cash donation, please go to andrews.edu/go/give/, use the dropdown menu under “I want to invest in,” and select (or search for) “Other.”

Once you’ve selected that, insert “Park Manor Fire Victims” in the “My Instructions” field, and provide your applicable donation information in the subsequent fields.
