Talks of a government shutdown in Lansing if a budget deal can’t be reached before the October deadline. Governor Gretchen Whitmer told Michigan News Network she hasn’t seen a proposal alternate to her 45 cent per gallon gas tax.

“If the Republican legislators don’t embrace the solution that I’ve put on the table, then that’s on them to come to the table with some alternative that gets us there, and they haven’t,” Whitmer said. “They went on vacation, they played golf, they traveled all summer long while I’ve been working to get a deal done.”

Republican Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield says the 45 cent proposal is a non-starter. Whitmer said this week GOP lawmakers are “screwing around” and have not offered a legitimate plan nearly six months after she made her proposal. She also criticized their call to shift money for schools to the transportation budget.
